G’day from Cairns, Australia

The biggest holdup is that we are currently renting quite a small place,
that's no holdup! that's a fat chance to make a lot of plans, of how the layout shall be.
draw a perfect plan - let the ink dry for a week or two - look at the plan and draw a better one... rinse and repeat.
(for me somewhere between the tenth and the fifteenth they start to look very similar)

some call that "armchair-modeling" - something i always enjoy between a boring old and a fascinating new layout.

and be welcome!

ps: if you should be too hasty with the planning, you can fill the shelves in the living with scratch-built buildings and stuff.

I like the way you think mate! I’m not very popular when I take over the dining room table as a lokomotive repair shop… which traditionally happens in about a week or so!

The Commer vans were so cool with their wheels covered by the bodywork.
Ever driven one? The driving position is in front of the axle so a strange sensation when steering around corners. :tmi:
Where did you learn to say good day in Luxembourgish? Don't tell me you are from Trier.

Isn't that because the front wheels are closer together than the back? The GPO place next to where I did my apprenticeship always seemed to have one on it's side where the driver had gone to fast through the gate

Welcome Doc from Perth, WA. I love Cairns. Spent a few days there recently and went on the Kuranda train. We were on the Spirit of Queensland overnight train to Brisbane which was affected by that big explosion just north of Brisbane!

Geoff
And you wouldn't even know it had happened, just drove through there this morning.
Was told that the emergency services people knew it was going to explode so they evacuated everyone and just waited for the bang. Not much you can do when Ammonium Nitrate and diesel mix after a collision and a fire starts.

Never had the opportunity to drive one, but sounds pretty cool. Big airport fire trucks are often set up that way too. I had the opportunity to drive one ages ago, but was concentrating on not running into anything! My mum and dad were living in Luxembourg when they met and lived there for 4 years in total, so it’s a special place to our family. I’ve been a few times and love it, but last time we were there, there was so much construction happening and I kept getting lost! ‍♂️

I did, it isn't. Apart from the steering the engine is pathetic, the gearbox a waste of space and the lack of a bonnet worrying in case of an accident.

I have been here for 41 years and the construction was and still is never ending, I need GPS to drive around Kirchberg thse days.

well, you must make SWMBO* an offer, she can't resist.
(oh, no! i did not mean the Marlon Brando kind of offer!)
i mean, support her with a hobby of her own. best one, that occupies space and is dirt producing. that should leave you on a longer leash.
(my best wife of all collects garden grills and plants. she buys them, plants them, waters them till they are dead, then pays a gardener to dig them out. in a semi desert climate...) (but she doesn't plant and water the grills)

*) SWMBO = she who must be obeyed. these Brits here love to hide things behind capital letter salads.

Thats because it is an ARE (Acronym Rich Environment)

The world is going mad! And I’ll be sure to keep clear of those vans!

Hi Doc, welcome aboard. Yes, we like acronyms, tea and photographs, not necessarily in that order. But there's a great mix of garden railroaders from all over the globe, with a mix of interests, so there's always something to look at/discuss...

Welcome: Be sure to let us helpers know what you think your future plans are. When going to DCC there are many variables. HO systems do not run high speed G scale engines. Also watch for current requirements. I have an old LGB 22 volt 5 amp system (55005) but is very limited in what it can do and programming is not from the command station. Newer Marklin LGB engines need CV 50 changed if not using the Marklin system. If installing your own decoders, some only work on DCC (these are mostly a couple of older versions). Myself I run a 12/8 amp system which outputs 24 volts to the rails and some decoders do not like this and default over 22 volts, however my system has adjustable output voltages and adjustable current settings on both track outputs. Very expensive system compared to the ones running lower amp output.
