Garden sheds

Do you have a garden shed as part of your railway ?

 • Yes, but I wish I hadn't bothered with a shed

The ever expanding workshop in the house is obviously a disease that is easily caught and spread among the faithful. I have a 12x10 ft in the garden but have "somehow" expanded into what should be the dining room which looks more like a hobby room than the actual outside workshop. Started with a small box of bits and a very small toolbox. Now has portable poly small free standing drawer units, cutting boards and a pretty comprehensive electronics tool kit not to mention test gear. Four current projects in various stages of build. My nearest loco building friend has a similar set up but has three large sheds and works mainly in the conservatory in a small heaped up corner that is also gradually expanding. It's definitely catching.

When I built Da Shed the idea was to run trains in and out so I carefully cut a tunnel entrance with a door that can be slid up to allow trains through, however 4 years later it still isn't attached to the rail network ::) . With all the stock in there plus the transformers and controls there is no room for a fridge and microwave but there is a fridge and bbq just outside the door ;)

Only have a 6 x 4 where tools jostle for room with train stuff.
It has a heater as it was used as a dog kennel by previous owners (they had ridgebacks!). I have insulated it and it can be quite cosy if I have set the heater too high!
It also has light and power sockets and for security it is scanned by a camera and is alarmed into the house system.

I dream of a large shed where I don't knock the shears off the hook when taking out a loco etc. Where I could sit down and 'fettle', but all that has to happen in the perishing garage where a 3 kw heater has to battle to slightly warm the air on a really cold day.

One day, one day................

I've built through the sheds (we have 2 brick built joined) with the stock kept in sealed wall units. The entrances are sealed with metal chicken coup doors. I really hated carrying the stock from the house to the garden.

Here`s a few views of my garden shed. The railway runs through it, but nothing is kept inside.

Short of a TARDIS could this be the ultimate outhouse?

Kedwards, that is a really nice shed. Well Railway Building I reckon.

Thanks Jon
The shed did become a bit of an obsession, but it does fit in with the garden railway theme and is an attractive building in its own right. Well I like it anyway.

Only secure shed at the mo is full of other stuff. Garden chairs/tools, ladders, bikes, chainsaw, hedge trimmer etc. No room to run trains into the shed or store em. Cunning plan is afoot though.

New 12 x 8 shed going in ready for spring 2014, and the existing brick outbuildings are hopefully being widened to accommodate storage sidings and train shelves a washer, dryer and laundry related items. :D

Ive only been in my house for 4 weeks, but heres what I intend to do. At the moment there is a UPVC outhouse down the side of the house. It measures 12ft x 6ft and is glass on UPVC. The back door comes through one end, but it leaves me with 12ft x 3ft - where I intend putting two of my display boards in, then a cat flap through the end window, a bridge over the path and Im away up the back garden. Its secure, I have a dog, and it has electrics, so Im hoping to make use of it pretty soon.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, especially JonD (Dunnyrail) as I hadn`t considered rebuilding the shed into a more functional building.
A mate of mine had this built a few years ago - when SWMBO saw it she thought it was great  :) as long as it was in someone elses garden  :-[ It has just has a re-paint and may end up fully lined.

We have two sheds. The big one is for machinery:

Putting anything train related in there would not be a good idea...

Then there is the double garage, which had a flat put in, so it's now too short for cars. I'm hoping to put a storage siding in there in the long term.

Pink Carriage, now there is a concept. Good luck with the rebuild Dtsteam. If you need any more info please ask.

:o Its owner would be gutted ! Its actually Crimson lake but faded in the sunshine.

I think most of our gardens would fit in Beddhists machinery shed ! I like the idea of the bit of tunnel to keep the weather out.

Ha, yes, we are lucky to have so much space. Now there is a thought: once we sell our business I could put a large HO layout in the big shed... The only problem could be it's damp in winter and stinking hot in summer in there.

Mr Beddhist, why not use some of the money from the sale of the Business to insulate it out with Foam Insulation Sheet. Line it with Chipboard Flooring. Will make all the difference and what a Railway Room!

On the subject of sheds I need to get one roughly 10 foot square, does anyone have any recommendations where to get one from?
