Hogwarts Express

Looks like you could fairly easily take 2.5mm off the boss on the back of each wheel if you only wanted to regauge it?
How much distance between the wheel backs and the chassis side Jon?
Yes that is what wlll be happening, there is plenty of room to remove that access and then move the cylinders in some. But first I need to test it, keep forgetting to buy 6x C cells!

Good call, ordered some just now. Never even knew such things existed, live and learn!
Can't remember how I found out about them, possibly trawling through eBay looking for batteries. Most of us have a few AAs around the place but Cs are not used so much these days.

I see Jedlam are now advertising this in the Gauge 1 section on eBay. Described as gauge 1 but the listing does make a cryptic reference to the track gauge - 'inside track 55mm'. Not exactly clear is it?

Totally unclear as the actual (as in I have just measured it to be sure) inside track measurement is 51mm.

Yeah, but......
Jedlam are just 'box-shifters' and will have no idea about how to measure track-gauge..

I bet if you put a rule across the top of the track, and measure outer-edge to outer-edge, you get 55mm. :wondering::nerd:

I wondered that as I was measuring but no. Nearest to 55mm measurement would be rail centres.

In this month's Garden Rail magazine, some has created 50mm gauge track from LGB, simply by cutting the track in half and adding a spacer

That will be great! - If Hornby release a whole swaithe (sp?) of 50mm gauge locomotives and rolling stock..
They might even start manufacturing track, as well? :wondering::shake:

A pretty unique solution, and from an engineering point of view, probably a lot simpler, than re-gauging the loco etc.

Straights and curves, yes but points would be trickier. I have one of these sets and my own thought was along similar lines but utilising the fair amount of plastic track I have acquired with all those cheap very much toy G scale train sets. I would not have a conscience about slicing them up and I'm not concerned about points just happy to get a larger circuit.

Hmm, I'm wanting some O gauge track for a Faller set so I suppose I could do the same but slice a portion out of the sleepers to bring it down to O gauge.

The thing that continues to bug me about this set is that Hornby (nee Tri-Ang) could have got a proper G Track jobby out of Lionel but either chose not to or decided not to bother. The former Lines empire has a long line of foul ups that could so easily have been resolved with a little bit of thinking and not allowing the cheep jack maximum profit Marketing to run the show. They likely would have made more profit from such disasters as Zero 1 and this had they got things right. Still I have not started to cut down to 45mm as yet and it will likely be running on my Drive Xmas day as is as I cannot do my normal Garden Open and Gluewine event this year. But a Social Distanced walk by to have a look should cause no issues.
