Hogwarts Express

Amazing. Shame they couldn't get it right (45mm, 1/32nd scale.) Those coaches are awful :shake: :shake:
They are but as mentioned earlier in this topic they are reminiscent of the early 1950s Tri-ang shorties. I was brought up on them, still have them all and love them!

That whine!
I was expecting to hear a bit of T-Rex start-up in the background.. :*:D:D

I'm busy converting the Gen1 Lionel Hogwarts for a bit of fun. I'm aiming for this, but we'll see how it turns out. So far it's a case of

Removal of the second pony wheel, name and number plates, boiler-mounted switch and a few other anomalies
Tenmille screw couplers & vacuum pipes
11.1v Li-Ion and power switch in the tender, Railpro LM-3S in the boiler
GWR Green paint
real coal load

It isn't going to win any modelling awards admittedly, but for the money, it shouldn't be too bad.

I'm currently designing and 3D-printing a clone of the motor worm gear as although not strictly necessary, I think it'd benefit from replacement of that awful stock motor; It seems to consume a large amount of current and convert it directly into noise :D

I have a spare Buhler motor which I'm going to try and fit instead. Failing that, I'll hunt around for another 12v one. Printing the worm gear means I can mess about without trying to remove the OEM one and probably wrecking the only other drive mechanism I have.

I have sold the Track and Coaches to a fellow forum member. Reading the latest G1 Journal it appears that the track is as near to what is commonly known as Gauge 2 (2”), measuring the wheels of Hogwarts that would appear to be almost spot on, a gauge that lost out to 45mm at some stage in the long distant past. Looking at my pics above confirms this to be the case where I have used a dual ruler to measure the Track Gauge. I wonder how long it will be before I get on with this? I have a set of Fosworks gear for powering and sounding it, all that would be needed is a Battery Pack. Decisions decisions.

Just in case of any interest there is a posting on Family Garden Trains showing how someone converted these locos to 45mm gauge. See following link:

If you can get a first generation one like I did and save the extra work of regauging, I think for the money, they are a great buy.

Even with the extra work involved with the later version, I think they're well worth it for their potential.

Here's mine on its maiden run. I still need to add the vacuum hoses and screw couplings. The whistle sound could do with some finessing too. It stops rather abruptly where I sampled it.
