Making my own track....next consideration

Not quite, but similar. From what I remember from standing in molten puddles of metal inn my college welding class, aluminium is a total b*gg*r to weld. Soldering or brazing would be a lot easier

I was agreeing with Greg as per your last sentence! The only true welds (metal to metal) are either hearth welding or fusion welding - both requiring heat. All other welds require fillers - either of the same material as you are welding - or to act as catalysts. At least that's as I understand it. Equally, certain types of welding require the welded material to be normalised.

Robin, the Warrior Run layout that Clem takes to various shows uses pink foam as a top surface. It is supported every 1' or so.

My aluminum rail was sprayed with brown primer before installation and then I sanded off the tops of the rails. It's a bit trickier if the rail is in the tie/sleeper web - needs lots of blue masking tape!

Hi Fred-
This is pretty much what I was considering for the top of an elevated layout but I realize it would need to be well supported. All things considered, though, I'll probably go with conventional wood planking as it would be more robust over time.
