Modifying a LGB Frank S into a tank (creating a Franco Belge KDL11 look alike!)

A bit more to report... second coat of satin black last night, gloss varnish where the transfers will go tonight. Satin varnish over the lot to protect and seal when finished...

Sorry - pictures taken in poor light this evening. You can see where the gloss varnish has been applied though :)

I've got a Bachmann Connie here (bought for a now scrubed project), and I'd just convinced myself to rebuild it as a larger machine in 1/24th by copying Kevin Strong's work :

(that way it could act as an industrial on my eventual 1/24th scale effort)

Now I want a Resita... maybe.

Anyone known if it's possible/necessary to turn the gearbox round on a 1:20.3 connie the way that guy's done it to an On2.5 version?

No, but the direction swap on the On30/2.5 one looks like better weight distribution to me. For some (who knows why) reason, I thought the motors on the Fn3 connies sits verticle?

Garrett - it's probably the outside frame that gives it the Resita look - I do like the 0-8-0t on the W&L - alas I suspect we'll never see LGB or Piko do one. The big advantage of using the Frank S on this project is that is has created quite a compact locomotive, my line is only short so long trains aren't really an option. Short chunky looking locos mean I can get away with a shorter train and still have a bunch of atmosphere :)
 
She's turned out very nicely, chunky and powerful looking but nicely proportioned. The risk of chopping a loco has been justified.
As to the Connie, it's a separate gearbox so you should be able to turn it with a few mods around it as something is sure to be in the way. James loco has a similar bunker which really does echo the Resita too. Friend of mines wife is Romanian and if you pronounce Resita correctly you need to think there's also effectively an H in there, yes rr-sheet-ah, with the R being quite a hard sound.

Just a bit worried as the satin varnish has gone slightly 'dusty' looking in appearance in places. It's evened out slightly as it's dried but in some light it's still very noticeable. I'll see how it looks in the morning in natural light - as that's obviously what it'll be viewed in most of the time. Worst case I'll need to strip apart again and respray the black and do new transfers... Fingers crossed...
 
Wow Mate it looks like it could have come straight from an LGB box!! I hope your a proud man!!!!....................................Paul
 
I've just read on the Humbrol website that the 'dusty' appearance is the matting agent not being mixed properly... grrrr...
However they do suggest that a coat of gloss varnish will disolve the matting agent - then you can apply a satin coat again. At least that's good to know.

Thanks guys - the matting agent still gives the loco a patchy dusty appearance this morning. I've refitted the windows and re-connected the lighting. I'll give it a run this weekend and then decide what to do - I suspect an overall coat of gloss one night and a re-do of the satin later in the week will be the order of the day.

I had my doubts about the side tanks when I saw them in the white - silly boy, shouldn't have doubted should I :thumbup::thumbup:
