NEW 'EMILY' COACHES FOR THOMAS THE TANK RANGE

I believe that the decision to produce these cars had nothing to do with the Thomas range and more likely to compliment the release of the retooled Southern 'Lynn'.
Very strange indeed as the L&B only had bogie coaches
yes indeed these are shown behind lyn in the backmann advert on the last page of garden railways august issue

Tempted by an interesting coach and Steve's bargain offer I now have an Emily coach. The first impression is that it is really glossy, but it matches Ok with my NQ coaches, perhaps just a bit smaller in height which is to be expected.

The roof falls off and is ready for a spray of matt varnish, but the body is more troublesome. Not only is the glazing glued into place, but there are plastic holding clips at the top which are glued into angled slpots in the body. It looks like severe violence will be needed to remove the glazing to allow an easy re-spray.

Has anyone had the courage to try this yet ?

Yes.... take your time and use some of swmbo's nail varnish remover (it softens the glue ;) )
See my thread....

I've just bought one of each from kgr,(got some newqida, too)
the box contains coupling converters to match standard coupling height. the couplings are quite big, but lgb couplings fit-I had to fit lgb's coupling hook to the bachmann's loop else lgb's uncouplers would not work.
the only other problem i've found is they are a bit reluctant to go round rad 1 curves

I have contacted brandbright asking if they have any plans to produce a set of seats ect. (steam@brandbright.co.uk)
contact from other interested parties might spur them on.
Steve @ back2bay6 already does interiors for Annie & Clarabel. Are the actual bodies of the 6 wheelers the same? In which case, these would fit.

Yes I agree with the above, take your time and they come out easy peasy

How would these look resprayed behind an Accucraft Caledonia?
Are they compatible in height and width??

Don't think they'd look right Keith. The dimensions of the carriage doors are pretty small (maybe even closer to 1/32 than 1/22.5 as with LGB). With Caledonia being around 1/19 scale I think the difference in scale would be quite noticable, although (because of their large wheels) their height would perhaps be OK?

Thanks Mel, I knew there had to be a snag. Just as well i didn't succumb at the weekend when I was viewing them for the first time.

Any experience with these on R1's? Been tempted to get two for my Bachmann US 'Lyn' look a like, think they would suit her well. Though they will have to get around the curves on the B&BLR! :D Do the front and rear move swivel like on other brands of G scale rolling stock?

The Emily coaches are near identical to the Annie and clarabel but win a different roof moulding, they just have a dummy centre axle.

They will do r1, but best to be slow when doing so, the Annie and clarabel I have in front of me, don't have swivelling axles or couplers,

Thanks for the info. As the whole of my layout is R1's you can imagine the issue I will have if they don't get around them :D

There are two issues with using the TTE 6 Wheel Xmas and Emily Coaches on R1 curves:

1/ Binding - They bind a lot and squeal like pigs, and cause a lot of drag - This is because the axles are further out than Annie and Claribel and also because they do not swivel.

2/ End Throw - The couplings on these, Annie and Claribel and the goods brake are all rigidly mounted. This is why Bachmann have produced that huge D shaped coupling, but even with this they still do not like reverse curves. Mine all have improvised swivelling couplings now, but I still avoid use on R1s whereever I can!

Yes, you have that right: I had to put Emily and her train away at the show this weekend because loco, tender and carriages squealed so much on Thomas' Branch's R1 and R2 curves . Even the four-wheel Bachmann goods wagons squeal on R1s. Sadly, I do not think there is any practical way to get wider curves on the layout.

I avoid reverse curves. As for the brake van, why in Trevithick's name did Bachmann choose such a long-wheelbase van? I have one that I never use; I am thinking of modifying it with bogies, like the Queen Mary vans.

Thanks for all the heads up guys. Will not be investing in any for my Baldwin if they are that much trouble. Might repaint a few Newqida Coaches for half the price. Got a number of them now and they seem to handle the layout well :D
