Rebuilding my Railway

................. Not sure if I should just scrap the idea I've also only just realised Pola no longer sell the goods depot I was wanting for it............

Try German evilBay for one, I'm sure some stockist over there will have one left on the shelf..... alternatively, I THINK that I noticed a new version of the goods shed in the Pola new releases list for 2017, so you may be able to use one of those once they are out.

I think I've seen one somewhere, or that might be the station I want.. I'm not sure :D. Here is what I've got done so far. I've included a picture as well with what I meant as a goods yard, I didn't explain it very well.

The Whizzy Cranks has been out as well :p

Nice to see Mr Lumphammers relitive out and about...sister sledgehammer

After a lot of swearing I got it to work.. :D Thinking of putting a tunnel along the back..

You might live to regret that, why not think about an an avalanche shelter. Has an open side and looks like a tunnel for all intents and purposes. Makes train retrievel if the worst happens so much easier and track cleaning as well. Plus would have the effect of making your fence appear to be a massive mountain, which in effect it is.

Interesting idea.. I'm putting a rockery along side the fence anyway, aren't Avalanche tunnels usually concrete? It was only going to be a short one that I can get my arm down.. Could make one like one of the East broad Top tunnels with doors on to stop animals getting in..

Some snow sheds were made of timber (e.g. early US )although i think more modern ones are normally concrete, but of course I stand corrected,be an interesting twist with doors on your tunnel, keep us posted on the rebuild, going well sir;););););););)

The idea of 'something' blocking the view(s) in places is good.. Then the railway seems to wander in and out of the landscape, as opposed to being 'plonked on top'!
You could build a 'rockery' / raised bed / hillside in front of the rear track. - Keep (at least) 18" flat and clear to walk / maintain / retrieve..
You could use a length of corrugated plastic, BEHIND your landscape, to keep debris off the 'tunnel' section. - Less maintenance that way.

Depending how secure the garden is, you could park-up the stock in it overnight, during the running season. - Though not loco's, especially with electronics in! Think condensation.

You say that but I've left a Piko BR 80 in the shed over night.. I'll take it apart before running it to check it over. I'm going to put a lot of baby conifers in the middle along with putting the pond back. Here is the plan I had in my head which will inevitably not work :D Although I will more then likely need R2 points for them two sidings as I can see trains catching the fence..

Shed could be OK.. depends on whether it is insulated, and / or heated??
Oh, and the time of year..
Bring it into the house for a day or two, and it will be fine.

I have done, its dry inside the shed.. has anyone made a avalanche shelter or snow shed for a garden railway before? Thinking of how much work it would require compared to a tunnel..

The problem with leaving locos in sheds is well known.. condencation kills electronics..its up to you..

I think you are correct that early ones in US at least were at least made of Wood.

Yes we had one in the Ruschbahn, Andy made it out of ply cutting holes in the side with a JigSaw. Inevitably it gave up the ghost and I was in the process of building a new one out of Hips Plastic when he sadly passed away. Hips cuts easy with a craft knife and if you get 5mm stuff is plenty strong enough. Not much difference in work to a Tunnel. You can see it in the second pic of this link.

I've brought it inside now.. It's not the pride of my collection and I can quite easily get the bits if condensation has got to the electrics.

I think I might just make it a tunnel.. Easier to make and a bit more interesting as the train actually vanishes briefly! Rock mouth like the one Sideling Hill tunnel on the East Broad Top.. In case anyone isn't aware I'm a bit of a EBT fan, wish I had the space to incorporate tiny little references to the EBT! :)

In the US Mags they talk about "Layout Design Elements" these being small parts that capture the definition of a prototype, I am sure with perusal of books you could capture some small parts to give your line that EBT look or feel. I have done exactly that with my line using LDE's from my chosen Sekeltalbahn in the Harz. Some are as small as a red blob on a white square of plastic to define sideswipe ends of sidings and running lines. Others on the list to do will be representations of the grade markers. Together with small groups of buildings I am I think begining to achieve my aims. That Tunnel Mouth will be a great start.
