Roll-wagen project

It's now fitted to the wagon - and I've sourced some off-cuts of 15mm copper piping for the vacuum cylinders from a plumbing friend. They should be perfect and also add a little bit of weight, low down, to aid stability.

James now that you are going on full pelt with the inspirational project, what are you planning to load to it? I have been wanting to build a G3 Open Wagon for a Roll Wagon that I also have in mind. But Drawings are a bit tricky to source. I will be needing a DR Open Wagon, but Opens are pretty generic in Europe. So long as mine is a Wooden One.

you'll find that James and I have been discussing the fact that the larger LGB 4 wheel wagons can be re-gauged to standard gauge basically with the simple addition of some S G wheels and drilling out the cosmetic axle boxes.

Thanks everyone - it's looking the part, but I'm not happy with the level of detail and finesse yet - it all looks a bit chunky and a bodge but it will get there when I start to add the pipework and pivots/bolts detail I'm sure - and primer and then a coat of black paint will render most of it invisible anyway knowing my luck!

I'm hoping to use some 37mm+ diameter wheels in them - and will fabricate the brake shoes afterwards.
 
Having looked on the GRS and Brandbright websites I think I'll use 42mm diameter disc wheel sets, but will wait until I have the wagon in my possession before I make the purchase as they might not fit, so I want to measure it first!
 
James I was in the former East Germany on the Steam Railway Trip. I took these pics with a view to posting them for you in case they were any help. Sorry i've been a bit busy getting ready to move. But today I finally managed to fish them out and get the job done.

Interesting difference on the tankers - the Brocken one looks far more like the proposed LGB model than my picture which is of the one at Drei Annen Hohne. Had never noticed until I saw the two pictures on this thread.

Great thread James - throwing up a wealth of interesting pictures.:thumbup:
 
A parcel from Dragon G-scale arrived today, my standard gauge 1:29ish OBB gondola. Yes it's a touch small as a load but it has a few advantages...
1) a lovely moulding with crisp detail
2) high quality finish
3) fits within most peoples loading gauges so can visit other lines!
I'll be removing the couplings and adding the appropriate draw gear to the buffer beams. I'm also planning on fitting a pair of Gauge 3 wheels when I track down something suitable - although the chassis is a little different to the German made wagons (I think it's a touch narrower) which may mean it needs slightly widening at the axleboxes - this shouldn't be an issue as they are a clip fit and I think there is about 2-3mm of adjustment on each side possible by lopping them off and re-attaching them.

I'm going to do a bit more on the brake pipework this evening too... this parcel has spurred me on!
 
I've sourced some wheels thanks to my appeal in the wanted section - 42mm was going to be too big so I hope these Emily ones will do the trick. Thanks Tony! :)

This evening I've fabricated the brake actuator and some of the pipework - I've got some more to add tomorrow, then I'll get some photos.
 
The wheels from Tony arrived this morning and I've fitted them to the large OBB wagon.

To fit them I've removed the LGB pivoting mounting, and then eased out the wheels on the axles until they were a tight fit between the wheel faces and the axle boxes, not prototypical but it serves two purposes, one it keeps them from turning so the load can't roll off, and second means I don't need to fabricate new axles or move the existing axle boxes out.

Obviously these need painting and I need to cut the brake blocks off the LGB pivot things and fit them in line with the wheels but it's looking good so far and raises the theoretically standard gauge wagon a bit higher and with obviously larger wheels! Compared with other LGB stock it looks big enough now I think to pass as a standard gauge load.

I've now test run the roll-wagen on R1s, loaded and unloaded, pulled and pushed through reverse curves and points with complete success! I'm chuffed, looking forward to finishing it off now.

I've worked out quite a few things about the build this time, I might well consider making a batch of these one day, if I do, I'll post up on the forum first, as it's easier to make them at the same time.
