Swift Sixteen New Stuff

Hmm... not sure about that Swift Sixteen turntable, very nice but very short. Seems to me the locos that fit it are likely to be tanks or small diesels that are designed to run in both directions and wouldn't typically need to be turned very often.
Exactly - they even say on their own website that "huge" engines like my Roundhouse Leek & Manifold won't fit. I wonder just what market they are aiming for - not the majority of 16mm layouts I would have thought.

Re the size of this TT. A little bit of additional length can be obtained by allowing the Rails to overhang. Or you could go down the route of the GWR that used to have Extension Bars. There is a good pic of these in use at Minehead in the book 'West Somerset Railway a View from the Past". Thougbas in the realmthing, extension bars may be somewhat cumbersome to use. These allowed a 2-6-0 to be turned as the Table had only be put in to cater for 0-6-0 and 4-4-0 locs. No such problems exist with the current TT at Minehead, 9f's and Pacifices being turned regularly.

You could always build a longer deck on top of the Swift Sixteen deck??

This would mean the pit being a little lower. The new deck would need to be stiff enough not to sag and catch with the weight of a loco on it..

At 33" long I still thing two in series would be better for the NGG16. :giggle::giggle::hi:

or just make one yourself!

As tank engines don't need to be turned and most tender locos are well over 300mm long the choice of turntable size is somewhat odd. A turntable is a great idea and I would like one but but my tender locos are over twice the length of the swift16 one.

I would guess one limitation would be the size you can make a rigid mould, but still be able to get the dang thang out!

It was not unknown for some Railways to always give Tank Engines a spin. Some of the Irish NG Lines were quite diligent in this respect, I am thinking Tralee and Dingle and Clogher Valley. The Glynn Valley also looked to have predominanlty ran Cab First, though not exclusively and I doubt the Baldwin would have fitted the TT's. Quite a few French NG Lines also gave their Corpets a spin at the end of each journey. So the smaller TT does have a use.

Rothbury table was pretty small. Also used as the run-round point.

Is it not meant to replicate a turntable for a typically British Narrow Gauge railway of it's day? Most didn't run "huge" engines during their productive working life did they?

I appreciate some of the preserved railways today run massive stock, but I don't think that's where this product is aimed.

Ah well, it's different and certainly quirky.

It's certainly whetted my interest. I am actively looking at how I might incorporate it into my station at Gernies End... do you know, I think it might just fit...

I was veeery nearly tempted by a turntable I saw at GRail, on the Malcolm's Model stand.

Made of wood, very heavy and 'Made in West Germany' on the underside.

Needed a little work but otherwise sound. Did anyone else notice it....

Great to see a company bringing more products to the market. Especially when they all look as good as the Swift Sixteen kit.

On the subject of turntables, didn't the Lynton and Barnstaple have one? Only used for turning coaching stock though if I remember what I read correctly?
