As pointed out above UK narrow gauge rarely had tender locos or turntables but people like a turntable and they are a great way to get a small loco depot in or a confined runround, as above, and like at Ventnor too.
A steeply graded line with a summit in the middle might have one half way even for tank locos so the front is always pointed uphill to keep the crown of the firebox covered with water. That's why you see many railways with tank locos all pointing the same way, like the Talyllyn as its ultimately safer. If you point the front downhill the loco is more likely to prime with water carried over in the dome as you need the level higher to keep the crown covered. Carrying water into the main steam pipe can kill pressure and also jam the regulator open or get into the cylinders, blow the ends off and bend the rods.
