Taita Gorge Railway

>:( Group running day cancelled.... Category 3 cyclone to blame. Best get ready then, for the rough season ahead, and fit the snowplow that comes with the railtruck. For those contemplating a similar alteration, I found it easier to leave the stay bars attached at the frame end, and unclip them at the plow end, also loosening off the top screws of the plow on the frame where they join.

Do you think it will handle vegetation debris? :-\

crajking shots..

:) Fun day planned for Sunday week, the Wellington Garden Railway Group, and other invited guests, are coming around for the Annual Taita Gorge Sprints (for Climax, and other geared locos), the inaugural Goose Shoot (for railtruck critters, and similar contraptions), and BBQ, with necessary beverages. Other visiting stock not excluded.

Now, a weather forecast prediction.... another drought breaker. >:(
How do I know this? Well, it always rains when it is my turn to host, as well as the fact that I've got things running sweet, with new isolating sections, and two new sidings going in tonight (so we can hold visiting stock, isolated without having to remove it so others can run).

:) Well, the 'new' sidings (pointwork and first railsets) went in last night. Easy job, done before my wife could heat up the Seafood Chowder we had for dinner. The points were recycled from the triangle... I've found that after the big extension of last year, that it was hardly being used. I'll do some photos at the weekend. ;D

Hope it stays dry for you 8)

Seafood Chowder. :D
Homer moment.

:D Here's the start of one of the new sidings. Climax 1203 is conveniently hiding the 'missing' track. Went to bid on the necessary on Trade Me (translation; NZ version of E-bay), but it went just as I logged on. The same seller though, let go an Aristo Train Engineer for a price I couldn't refuse, and good bye Basic TE (off to grandson's HO layout, that). 1203 in the photo is running under the new TE control, boy it's great to get a control response without having to walk back closer to the receiver, or touch the aerial on the rail. ;D

I have a basic TE - and basic it is! How does the new one operate Gavin? Is it just a track connection and nothing complicated (for me) like DCC ? - I'm a novice when it comes to these modern gadgets!

Well, you connect one end to a power supply, and the other end to the track.... same as the basic TE. You have 10 frequencies, and 10 channels, but at the moment, I only need one, I suppose, just like yourself. Read the instructions half a dozen times, and you will eventually figure that you select a channel, and programme one of 10 frequencies into that. Simple as pressing and holding, and letting go a few buttons. Bit like the manual tuning back in the days when TVs had to be tuned. Once done, it's done. The transmitter has extra buttons. Key to remember is that if you are on the wrong channel, nothing works. Also, the Tx will go into sleep mode if not used for a certain period... simply turn the Tx on/off button on.

After 12 years of mild frustration (mainly lack of range, and weak signal) with the basic, glad to have finally had the opportunity to upgrade. Well, always wanted to upgrade, but the price was not right (could buy a loco, maybe two, for the price). Luckily, I got my TE for the cost of a few wagons.

Thanks Gavin. So there is hope for a dinosaur like me ;D As you say also, getting one at the right price .....

I shall keep a lookout!

;) Was doing some railway rules recertification a month or three ago, and the Instructor was doing introductions blah blah..... and this is Gavin, he's a dinosaur! (As in, I started in the job before he did, and he is retiring this year).

But does that make you feel young (him retiring before you) - or older (because of his comments)?

??? Who cares... so long as Payroll send me that nice e-mail every two weeks!

;) Lovely warm Autumn day in the Colonies, so, one lays up in the Shady Rest to watch trains go by, with the TE in one hand, and the amber fluid in the other. Then, by crikey, that scene is worth a photo. The joys of being able to just sit, and relax, and have trains respond to controls... such bliss.

That is the aforementioned shade in the foreground.
