What railway holidays will you be taking this summer.

:D On my 'to do' list. Still part of QR?

Got a family wedding in Scotland next year.... checked out some trains from London, the 10.00 from Kings Cross to Edinburgh seemed to ring a bell. It my not still be called the Flying Scotsman, but nevertheless, looks a likely trip... even has 'off peak' fare!
Ok the Gulflander from Normanton to Croydon on its weekly run is QR. In the Dry season there are numerous daily runs including the 1936 AEC railmotor but they are not run by QR. QR supply the track, trains, crew and sparkling repartee but the services are privately run though you will find information on those services scarce but if you phone my mate John the station master at Normanton 07 4745 1391 you will be appraised of what is going where and when.

http://www.gulflander.com.au/Pages/Default.aspx

There is also a trip from Cairns to Normanton (The link between Forsayth and Croydon is by motor coach) and vice versa that takes in quite a few of the off track sights enroute eg Chillagoe caves, Undara lava tubes, Cobold Gorge( truly spectacular). Its expensive but probably worth it, its more of an adventure and I reckon good value for your money. No sleeper accommodation so the trains stop at what you could call towns for refreshments, meals and O/N accommodation. Its a week long trip, scenery varies from rainforest steep grades to open savannah with termite mound counting and prizes for spotting the tallest, shortest etc. Its wild, desolate, quintessentially Australian country....

None planned. I take caravan holidays, but they usually involve a trip to the nearest local Railway Attraction.
Ditto, on both fronts, but we are managing to pop to Florida for 3 weeks in the school summer hols this year. Not sure there will be much railway oriented stuff though.

Sort of toying with the idea of doing the Colorado narrow gauge venues bookended with legs of the Amtrack 'California Zephyr' From San Fransisco into Denver and then out to Chicago, but that all may have to wait until next year, funds permitting etc etc.

Might just get one shorter visit in this year....there's always hope.....

Ticking off a few more narrow gauge railways on my UK quest to visit all over 12" gauge.

Roughly a fifth of the way through the 200+ I need to visit. I've done all the most local so will have to be venturing further afield. South Wales, London area and Scotland are on the list for the coming year.

I must do the IoM sometime soon as it's only a short hop across the Irish Sea from here. The missus is not interested so may try one of those railway package tours I keep seeing advertised - eg http://www.greatrail.com/tours/vintage-railways-isle-of-man-holidays.aspx

Has anyone tried it?

f the Amtrack 'California Zephyr' From San Fransisco into Denver ...

:D Please, it is Amtrak. Done 3 trips into Denver from San Francisco on the Zephyr (my favourite train), can't beat it. Denver, of course, is home to supposedly the worlds largest model railway shop, Caboose Hobbies (just a short bus trip on the edge of the CBD). The staff there dine at Wendy's, just across the road. Another worthwhile bus ride, is out to Golden, nice town that is close to the Colorado Railroad Museum (Garden Railway in museum grounds).

I did a bit of costing and found a Shearings coach trip to the IoM which works out considerably less expensive than I could organise for myself
http://www.shearings.com/england/isle-of-man/holidays/railway-journeys-of-the-isle-of-man

There were only two single seats left on the coach so I asked if I could have the one next to a voluptuous blonde.
The girl on the phone responded, "Nah, it'll probably be next to a 70 year old bloke in a cloth cap"

Not tried a Shearings Coach Trip before so not sure what to expect.

Off to Snowdonia in July. Corris once again and then a Porthmadog to Caernarfon and return trip among others. Then probably Bala Lake Railway and if the weather is good up over the tops to reach the side of the reservoir and on to Welshpool and Llanfair. Not going up onto the mess that the top of Snowdon has become though, either by train or foot. By train it is definitely an experience better missed, being the ultimate tourist trap. No need for snow on top lof Snowdon, it already has a concrete crown.

I rather fancied a trip across the big quarry suspended from the high wire line, but no way am I being allowed to do that. "Far too old" and "you can't fly" being the only reasons given so far. Arguments like "its safer than driving there" or "safer than crossing the road" unfortunately cutting no ice on this occasion. Never mind. A trip out to North Stack RSPB viewpoint and cliff reserves will be acceptable. Sit in car if wet or picnic lunch if weather is good, then fire up HF rig and chat across the big pond. Sometimes multiple hobbies are very rewarding.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa thanks chaps for this entry... On my upcoming European tour I am going to try and squeeze this in. Her indoors has cut out the Lisbon part of the trip but IoM is on my bucket list and I was going to do that in 2029 along with the Rainhill celebrations. I should do Iom before then as I may not make it to Rainhill (or 2029 for that matter). Assuming that the allow Aussies on the Isle, I don't know ANY that have been there...

If you are doing Porthmadog, don't forget the WHHR...

The little one at the other end of the Cob.

Just a small one.
Derby to London St Pan, Eurostar to Brussels, then German ICE to Colonge. Colonge via Basel to Chur for 3 days playing on the RhB including the Bernina and Glacier express's. Then 3 days in Kandersteg on the BLS route, visits to Zermatt and Interlaken and hopefully get to Europe's highest railway station at Jungfraujoch. Then its TGV from Geneva to Paris, Eurostar to London and back to Derby on East Midlands trains.

Sounds more or less like a week at work for me. Ok, the Jungfraujoch doesn´t happen very often. And to be honest, I don´t get to Derby much either. ;)

Yes - it has one of the best railway bookshops in the country particularly for narrow gauge stuff.

The bara brith in their cafe isn't bad either

I have an absolutely daft idea.
Having been stuck in with awful weather I need to get out so have devised a plan.
As the opportunity arises am going try and visit all the G scale emporia in England and Wales (to start with)
So far have been to P&S Hobbies York, Arcadia in Shaw, Glendale Junction nr Peterborough, Railway Shop Grosmont, Back 2 Bay 6 Telford, Bay Models Carnforth.
Where to next?
Any recommendations?
