Can we get back onto the Blue batteries for a minute

Came across this when searching for balance charge leads ............. :o

Trying to decide whether to invest in one - but I'd need one large enough to hold the loco as well! :-\

Been browsing the Hobbyking website and came across this - http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__26672__Turnigy_5000mAh_3S_20C_Lipo_Pack_UK_Warehouse_.html

The also have up to 8Ah 3S batteries (for around twice the rpice) - but at £15 it's not that much different from the Chinese blue batteries in terms of price (they seem to have increased in price recently) and one must assume that they will have a better reliability rating - just a bit more fiddly to fit to ensure all the leads remain accessible for charging.

Why not make your own? Fire proof engine shed with isolated rails so that you can drive the loco in to it then via pickups on the wheels charge the batteries? maybe some sort push push on type switch that the loco pushes up against to switch on the power..... Make up a dozen and flog the surplus ones on eBay....

Forget it.......they were all the rage once upon a time when people did not know how to handle LIPOS and accidents such as fires occurred.
Just DO NOT leave a LIPO or LITH ION alone when charging.....AND remember..a LiPO does not have a safety PCB for charging/discharging.
Best thing to charge batteries in...a largish clay flower pot. Easy to pick up and launch..if necessary

Very interesting, the last 4800mAh blue battery I bought from china came in one of these with bubble wrap around the battery.... If you ever have a fire with one of these batteries (they are very rare these days) DO NOT TRY TO EXTINGUISH IT WITH WATER!!!! we may joke about this but if you wish to be very conservative and really alarmist then I suggest charging these in an airtight container, from what I read fires start when the case develops cracks or holes which allows oxygen to come into contact with the contents, no oxygen - no fire....

SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT.

I dropped a 7.2v lipo onto a carpeted floor...it puffed up...it went out on to the garden very quickly, where I left if overnight and then dumped it.
Dropping, puncturing shorting..if they puff..get rid!

Though for the day Trev.....How the heck can you tell if the black plastic hard cased types of Lith puffs up?
Ouch! That's very scary - I hadn't realised they were that delicate.
Did it short out somehow do you think or is the shock of dropping one sufficient to rupture a cell?

Rik

Well they seem as safe as Nitroglycerine......

Shouldn't they be banned?

........and those are cells not inside a model.

I am often asked about them. I flatly refuse to have anything to do with them for our usage. Period!!!

But I think the case above shows that using them in applications where they can be knocked is against common sense, i.e. model aircraft and cars.

Cheers,
Peter.

So, if I get a new mobile, and drop it like the number of times I have dropped my present one, I am likely to burn the place down??

:o ??? ;)

That video is truly frightening.
An extreme set of purposefully generated circumstances he was deliberately 'detonating' them;

Yes, I appreciate that if you know what you're doing everything is likely to be OK but as a founder member of the Negligent and Stupid Society I'll leave well alone, thanks. :)

IF anyone in the UK gets one let us know how it came....airmail(!) or sea or via Singapore/Switzerland ( by air believe it or not via the two latter seems to work despite the rules)..

I'm on the opposite side of the world, but have just ordered 2 Lipos from Hobbyking in Hk. I'll let you know how it goes.

They were showing the result Trev......its the result they wanted to show when one goes off..
For your info..houses have burned down, cars have been burned out (by charging spare sets of batteries and people wandering off to fly their models leaving the things unattended.......)

You get the same result if they are messed about with and abused (without setting them off deliberately)!! ::) ::)

It's like flying.
It's not inherently dangerous, but is terribly unforgiving of negligence and stupidity.

Some people never learn.
Did you see the video of the woman on the chinese bus whose moblie went up in flames? most interesting....

You will have no worries.... I ordered one, a 4 cell 2.2 ah and they had nil stock in Australia so it came from HK in 5 days Par Avion.... Which says something about the "new" Hobby King they used to be sort of socialist if they had nil stock in the place you put in your order you used to have to wait till stock came in, now they despatch from the most "sensible" location.
Some times living in the colonies does have fringe benifits, someone realises that the chances of a well packed LIPO going up in flames is about the same as being hit by a russian missile....

But the blue batteries that were the cause of the thread seem to be relatvely low in stock on eBay only a few advertised, used to be lots....

So the aviation rules don't apply to "the colonies"?

Hmmm I think they do, maybe not policed as enthusiastically? Maybe the sniffer dogs and xray machines dont worry? I would have thought a bag of Ferric Chloride would have posed a greater risk if it got spilled but even that comes thru with no problems. Something else I have noted things like batteries get here quickly yet order a few leds and they can take a month. Maybe we are just slack and idle colonialists? ;) ;)

Oh aye.. Have you seen the bus CCTV video news item (yesterday) of the Chinese woman replacing her phone battery on the bus...It blew up and caught fire and emptied the bus in 5 secs flat. She slung it out of the door!!!!

Never say never!! ;D

Unfair you royalists are picking on me! I asked you that question a few posts back......

Well, I`m just blown away how quick that went: ordered on 10th, shipped on 11th, arrived today (15th). It looks like the box was not opened by customs, but by Fedex:

IMG_3246.jpg

In the paperwork were 2 copies of a Lithium Battery Safety Document, which makes reference to 8 different ICAO/IATA packing instructions. It also states that the included batteries have a max. of 20 and 100 Wh per cell and battery and contain a max of 1 and 2 g of Lithium.

After all this and reading the charger manual in Chinglish I am starting to wonder whether I have bought the wrong thing. They are adamant that the batteries must be disconnected and removed from equipment while charging. Another thing I didn`t know was that not only do you have to connect the balance leads, but the main leads as well. So much for installing a charging socket. The manual also says that the charger must not be used to charge batteries equipped with protection circuits. I guess I will now need two of those as well.

For the rail truck and Davenport this may work, but I will need a different solution for my Piko 204 Kamel, as you can`t remove the body easily. But it`s probably big enough to take a Pb battery.

Does not appear that the air regulations do apply in the Colonies.... Are you sure about having to connect both leads to charge? Don't know why you would have to do that the 4S 2.2ah one I bought off them has not got that instruction... Even if FedEX opened them thats very good service....
