LGB II (The Sequel)

Looks much better without the reverse curves. Running should also be improved.
Simpler is sometimes better!

Today the weather was fine, although quite cool. I've been waiting for a dry day to do some track replacement, and today's task was to replace the R1 scissors crossing....

I then made up the replacement scissors crossing with R3 (22.5 deg) points, using some of the track pieces recovered from the previous R1 (30 deg) crossing....

Next job is to finish connecting up to the existing track....

I reckon it looks a lot better than the R1 version I had previously as per the picture below.

I'm gradually replacing R1 points on the main line with larger radius R3 or Trainline R2 where space is tight.

R1 will only be used in sidings....

It does look a lot better, Gizzy..

I reckon the 'trains' will flow better, as well?

I assume that 3-Way is your antique R3 version (you lucky dog).

I managed to connect up the track work before the rain, and before my back gave in! Another dose of pain-killers taken.

I took a picture to compare it with the previous R1 version in post #127. It's around 50% longer, much straighter, and the arc angles are shallower, so longer rolling stock like the TEE set will look much better crossing it....

The object of my envy has been realized! I just snagged an LGB 1235N on the auction site that shall not be named. After looking at the picture of your 3-Way when you first acquired it, I am quite hopeful that mine can be made fully functional with minimal refurbishment. I also have one of those 30* crossings from Bertram Heyn and some R3 points. Now I just need the space. (P.S. Anyone in the market for an R1 3-Way? :))

Nice one Ken!

Just so you realise, the Bertram Heyn Crossing in the above post is a 45 deg one to use with R3 points (22'5 x 2). It replaced a 60 deg one used with R1 points (30 deg x 2)....

A little bit of pondering today. I'm replacing R1 points on the main running lines with LGB R3 ones where possible (or Trainline R2 minimum). R1 points are to be relegated to sidings only,

I have going spare a pair of R3 LH points, a R3 RH point and a Double Slip as well as a RH R2 TL point.

So I've laid the larger points over the existing formation to get a feel of what I'm planning to do, once my back is better!

This is where my double track main line is singled, before it enters a tunnel which will be fitted with a mirror to give the effect of the line continuing to the rest of the world G scale network....

It is just over a month since I last worked on the railway, due to a bad back, holiday in Switzerland and generally being busy on weekends, but this weekend I managed to get some more work done, followed by a visit by Mizzy's Aunt and cousin when I ran a couple of trains for them.

On Sunday, I had to give the track a good clean with the track rubber and remove fox poo, then I started checking the track. My reversing chords weren't functional, so I traced the fault and found a chewed up cable, probably fox damage. I replaced the cable but this time I wired it up to the track clamps as the 1015T isolating track had rusty screws on the terminal block. I've cleaned these and they would still work, but I find it a bind to remove the cover and thread the cable under the 1015T section.

A test run ensured all track was running for the following day. Only the inner reversing chord needs to be rewired and I'll save this for another day.

On Monday, I was able to run the full 7 car VT 11.4 TEE consist on my layout for the first time, following lengthening of the reversal chords mentioned.

I also ran my recently acquired Mallet with all the bells and whistles, much to the delight of Auntie Jean and Cousin Karen who had never seen it before.

Unfortunately, I've aggravated my back again, but running a train shouldn't be a problem....

I remember seeing one of those TEEs at a display somewhere in the north-east - a very impressive beast, complete with all sorts of sounds, including station announcements.

You ought to run it though some sort of tubing
It is on the ground Paul, but I hadn't secured the cable to the back of the arbour where the reverse modules are located.

Lesson learned....

I've run my newly acquired Mallet on a couple of goods trains today. Although I have some passenger coaches LGB 3062/3063 and an assortment of parcels vehicles, my main preference is for freight. I have quite a few from 2 axle vans, flat, low side wagons and tanks, to more modern bogie wagons like the SHIMMNS and container flats.

But my favourite wagons are the hoppers. I have a rake of 8 of OEG (Olde English gravel) ones, which can be augmented by 3 Yellow LGB versions I use for the PW fleet....

Mallet hauls the hoppers over the newly laid scissors cross-over on to the main up line....
