Ox Mountain Railway

A Californical solution.

Yes - I remember seeing a similar (if not the same) in a encyclopedia about 60 years ago at my gran's!

Had to hack a lot more off this afternoon - I may have to rethink things.

SWMBO one or two cuttings growing so it could be just a bit further with the saw, and a planting job.

This one was chopped down many years ago.
I believe you are correct that another one recently joined the grove celestial.

I cannot tell a lie .... No, it was not I - but it might be after yesterday's frustrations!

I started to retest the, now repaired, loco of yesterday's ill-fortune. Yep! The repair worked - good old UHU!. I set the loco off by itself just in case - although I had checked points and track.

The morning's drizzle had improve the conductivity on the two joints mentioned yesterday. As I looked on, the loco progressed to the return loop but and then failed to show itself through the hedge! Although I had propped the branch up (just in case I had weakened it by cutting a deep notch), the loco's stack had caught on the branch.

There was a pause for thought, then out with the saw! having tested the clearances again, the loco was free to travel back along the line. After its' hal-circuit on the inner line, it turned onto the connecting line and managed to wedge itself under the span on the high level line! (why - it didn't do so yesterday?).

So, back in the box, out with this BH .....

It sounded it bit like a grass strimmer - so off it came. Next was the Sante Fe BH which I knew had problems (replacement chassis for both await fitting). After coupling up, off it went!

The Grape Hyacinths, brushed aside by the loco, managed to derail a tanker (the one with plastic wheels). So the whole lot went back in the shed At least, I'd tried three locos - only to be thwarted by mother nature:banghead:

Sounds like some serious deforestation is required, me I hacked down a large shrub the other week cos it caused some damage to a fence. No mercy to itinerant plants I say. The Trains must get through!

I only have daffodils to contend with - a few of them decided to come up the wrong side of the track edging. I think it's fortunate that I used a weed control barrier under the ballast, as I suspect that some of the bulbs are right under the PW :eek::eek:

There's no control here - even with a barrier - they just grown in the gravel!

Well I did it - I cut the B out! Took some doing, as it had its' own branches (one over then foot long!) and I had to get in and cut it into sections. Said branch, and portions of, now providing nibbles for the goat. Tomas supervised..

The brittle plastic bags have added to the mess...
DSCF8492.JPG
There are large gaps now but I can lean over to clean the rails!

And a pic from yesterday illustrating surface tension....

DSCF8486.JPG
The sun has made another appearance again so I might run a train!

Quite a pile of prunings there - but they soon regrow.

I have now got to sort out the corner where all the ballast is dumped - tried yesterday by re-bagging some but after one was done I gave up!

The stump and a view through the hedge.....

It's four feet down from the railway to the stream so all the activity was from my side of the stream. Will have to wait for better weather and less water to finish off the task!

I decided, after tea, that I really needed to prove that all was OK. I decided on the simple Aristo 0-4-0 - not much to derail there - plus I knew where it was! As mentioned before, it is a bit of a Billy Whizz - especially if you like to see a glimmer of light in the firebox or headlight (like I do). I guess lighting is voltage related so, if I want to run at a prototypical speed - using the simple Bachmann controlller - then there's a compromise...

Setting off....
DSCF8495.JPG
.... across the bridge .....
DSCF8496.JPG

.... around the return loop. Phew - made it!....
DSCF8497.JPG

...and coming back ....
DSCF8505.JPG

... destined for the inner circle ....
DSCF8508.JPG

.... and coming back on to the outer for a return trip ....

So no problems. Long term, I need to sort out levels and the problem of gaps in the line (across the two bridges. Unfortunately, I proved conclusively (to myself), that the extension - including the pivot point for the steel bridge - had migrated away from the original railway by about 15mm plus! I know where the blame lies but it is eight years too late! And it wasn't me! That's why I dug the stream out myself last year so it didn't happen again!

Having purchased, what I considered a bargain off that famous auction site, it was only uesterday that I got to see it. I couln't wait to test it out so I ran it around the track a few times when we arrived back home.

This morning, I cleaned and lubricated it and fitted a loop (it came minus couplings) so I could hitch on a couple of my wooden scratchbuilds.

By then, the sun was out (so were the cats) as I ran the train around for a few circuits before letting it on to the branchline...

Its a first generation Bachmann Lyn and I'm pretty impressed with it. Although the vans are no wider than the loco, they do sit a bit higher
having been built to go with the scratchbuilt steeplecab...

and there is a driver and a fireman in the cab. I need to find out a bit more about these locos - like how to get to lubricate the gears (it's a clamshell type housing).

On to the branch - jusy as I was getting set to take a pic, Tomas jumped on the track and immediately sat down with his back to the loco! He got up as it nudged him, moved down the track and did the same again!

They were both out in force....

On the return journey, the loco lost its' train and shot off for the inner circle before crossing to the outer and shooting off through the tunnel!

And then it rained quite heavily... Cats went inside and left me to clear up.

With the weather as it developed from the early hours of this morning, I didn't think I had any chance of running a train today! But, after the hail, the snow - and then the rain - it had all gone! Even the wind played a part as it dried the track.

I fitted Aristo knuckle couplings to my latest purchase instead of the hook & loops supplied and then got the Sante Fe switcher out to hook up to the coach. Tagged a Bachmann caboose on the back just to give a slight impression of a train.

The cats were asleep inside the house but they (probably - as in certain - it was Tomas) leave their mark...

(It was just the insulators - now the crossbars are getting chewed!)

Anyway, off in a clockwise direction to the branch ...

and back...

Around the inner circle to cross back over to the outer...

DSCF8542.JPG DSCF8543.JPG DSCF8534.JPG DSCF8544.JPG
And, for the first time in ages, on to the High Level line .....

Even after a previous culling of Daffy heads from the line, the stems and leaves continued to grow - so they were removed to allow the train to progress....

DSCF8545.JPG
DSCF8546.JPG
and on to Ivy Ledge - all a tight squeeze!....

DSCF8547.JPG

Then on to the bridge and the downward stretch to the Inner Circle ...

DSCF8548.JPG
DSCF8549.JPG

DSCF8550.JPG

.... then back across to the outer line ...

DSCF8533.JPG
and to finish with an auto uncoupling - must have been the vegetation catching on the coupler?

DSCF8551.JPG
Other than that, all worked well!

A good successful run their, Mick, although the trestle in the next to the last photo looks to need a bit of TLC.

H'mm - never noticed that! Was more worried that train might derail from encroaching shrubbery!

Wot? Not the Pick-a-dilly line?

Yeh! Pick your own! I dug loads out a couple of year - they still keep coming! Now I used to like Picalilli - but not seen any in the shops here:)!
