The EJ&KLR: Austrian narrow gauge in Cheshire

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Cheers guys :)
It brightened up about 7.30 so out I went drying the rails off and gave both Henrik (the new 798.201) and the U-tank another run whilst supping a nice bottle of real ale, and putting the world to rights with an old friend. A lovely evening - why I built the railway really.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

I popped in to Chester on the way back from a day out in Anglesey. It was Dad's birthday on Saturday so it only seemed right to run some trains. First time the Zillertalbahn coaches used outside, they carry a tribute to Dad on the underside of the roofs.

Got a few trains out this morning but had to head home so haven't been able to make the most of the beautiful weather today!

Re:The EJ&KLR project

We've had some lovely weather this afternoon and as I'm visiting Chester I've been running the line. The Round Robin box car has been running a lot, along with my daughters new brake van (birthday present). I used my proper camera for these photos, I'm quite pleased with how some of them came out :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

...and finally some black and white photos - since a lot of the prototype (Austrian) narrow gauge photos I've been inspired by have been shot in B&W :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Lovely photos James, looking very atmospheric - especially in black and white:thumbup:

And the line looks to be maturing and bedding in nicely.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

It's amazing at the difference in character between everyones layouts on this forum, and you have really captured the Austrian charater and atmosphere perfectly. Some excellent and inspiring pictures of an excellent railway there James. :D

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Thanks chaps :)

Well beer, magazine and trains... that was earlier.

Then running after dinner... 298.56 and the OBB bogie coaches in the evening sun!

Now - can't wait for tomorrow :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Tony's box van arrived today - here she is posed with Henrik...

Paul (Minimans) also helped me out so I've another pair of vans (another DR one like this, and a Chiquita balcony van) on their way across the Atlantic somewhere...
The question is what to do with the pair of DR ones?
I think I want to tone down the finish - I might see if the 'DR' and number comes off - so I can re-letter for the EJ&KLR - if not then a respray in freight grey.

The Chiquita van will become a passenger brake van like Bruce has done on the HH&DLR. More soon!

Re:The EJ&KLR project

A great set of photos, both colour and b+w. The latter really catch the feeling of the days of steam. Thanks for sharing them.

Some distance shots of the layout would be good to get a more overall view as it has developed when you are able to.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Gordon - not a lot has changed really since the last 'overview shots'. The next big thing layout wise will be the installation of a platform and the station building. After that I've plans to research Austrian railway signage and work out how to represent some of that, then possibly some fencing and telegraph poles in a few places. Not sure how much I'll get done this year, but we'll see :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

I love this forum.

A fortnight ago I posted a 'wanted' thread for the sought after LGB 2095. Well Mike (dutchelm) offered me his new, boxed, 2095.06 - a vintage 2006 model with improved detailing that had never been run for bang on the money I had available from my birthday.

I snapped his arm off and picked it up yesterday on a day trip to see my grandparents.

Not only was he a genuinely nice chap, who offered my family some hospitality and a break on our journey - he also threw in a photocopy of the LGB magazine article on the 2095 and a DVD!

So as I'm not close to the EJ&KLR full testing will have to wait until later this month but for those that spied the teaser on my blog (http://ejklr.blogspot.com) yesterda...w I might scratchbuild a transporter wagon...

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Got home from a weeks holiday today so paired the 2095 up with my Frank S conversion to compare sizes - I'm pretty happy with both, they look bob on. I'm unsure what to do with the 2095 in terms of it's finish - I haven't actually weathered anything in G-scale, and at present don't have any plans to do that, however the cream vacuum brake hose and white outlined buffer really are crying out to be 'toned down' just a touch. I might look to see if I can source spares to keep these ones mint, and just replace them with all black versions.

Anyhow - here are a few pics...

I'll be taking everything over to Chester and the EJ&KLR this coming weekend - so more photos then!

Re:The EJ&KLR project

The 2095 finally made it's debut on the EJ&KLR today after some terrible weather... prior to running I had to some PW work, something I find very relaxing and good fun actually! Check out my blog for more information on that...

So what do you think?!! Mum looked at some of these snaps and said 'wow it could be real' - funny thing is compared to my 4mm stuff it's really not very realistic at all, but being in the outdoors, with natural light and real greenery and it just brings thing to life :)

So first up a few on shed...

Re:The EJ&KLR project

That's a very neat layout and really does look realistic. Looks like there's lots of fun and relaxation to be had there in years to come.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Gordon - thank you. It's been a god send building, maintaining and enjoying the railway. I look back on events from the past 8 months, and feel so much happier and content then I feel perhaps I should be - I know that my father, who started this project with me, would have loved seeing trains running in the garden, but things just didn't work out that way. I find myself thinking about him whilst working on the ballast or doing weeding - the line is therapy and a tribute - and thats why it's going to be so successful for many years to come :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Lovely photo's James
Photo 7 looks fantastic with the loco coming round the curve with the conifer back drop:bigsmile:
