The EJ&KLR: Austrian narrow gauge in Cheshire

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Hi guys, I've spent the day in Chester again and have made some pretty good progress on the outdoor EJ&KLR...

We've got as far as laying some track this evening too...

It started with this...

...and I built up the wall...

...before then infilling behind the wall and starting on the trackbed (sharp sand)...

and finished with getting the track alignment sorted again (major nightmare trying to do this ON TOP of sharp sand which is very grippy, not like paving slabs when I did it last time!)...

All good fun!
Tomorrow off out early to buy some more infill material, a few more bags of sharp sand and look for some track ballast.

Full wording and hopefully more frequent updates on my blog: http://ejklr.blogspot.com

Re:The EJ&KLR project

James, when you are done there, you can come by here, seems I can work on everything BUT the railway

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Great progress James.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

I'd have covered it if rain was forecast. Dry again tomorrow... hope to get the track ballast down to protect the roadbed before it rains :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Thanks Colin - fine again here today... should be good to go down to garden centre / DIY store for 10am :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Going well but couldn't source any track ballast. Photos later, loop is down, sidings to sort this afternoon...

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Well it's been another lovely day here in Chester - but VERY VERY windy. We've made lots of progress and have used up all the Wickes order as well as an extra 3 bags of ballast and two of sharp sand...

So that's 13 bags of ballast, 12 bags of sharp sand, 2 bags of mortar and 20 bags of topsoil - about £120 worth!

What do you think? Ready for planting, ballasting and the last section of track cutting to fit.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Some hard work gone into that today James. If I were you I would reward myself with a refreshing pint or two

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Looks good james i don't think i'm very far from you..
Do you live in chester? or macclesfield as you stated in your location...

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Macclesfield Phil, but the railway is being built in Chester at my parents home - it was a last 'father and son' project. Dad saw the plans but never any outdoor progress before he passed away in January. Mum then wanted us to build it anyway and it's proven to be therapy as well as a tribute. At present I've no plans for a railway in Macclesfield, the garden is probably a bit less secure and the wife isn't keen - but we might get some track for a second indoor line back in Macclesfield at some point :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

That's looking excellent James! Lots of playabilty, I mean operating potential, with a fairly decent run. I like the start to the landscaping.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Cracking work James you have been busy

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Thanks guys - you're kind words are welcomed. It was a good weekend of progress and activity, it felt great to 'finish'. I'm worried about leaving the roadbed unballasted, but the sharp sand has crusted over and the embankment sides are protected with top soil so it has no where to go if it rains... still it needs covering ASAP!

We managed to run a 'test' train yesterday - entirely appropriate for the weekend as it conveyed some of Elly's princesses!
The Stainz collected quite a lot of muck on it's front drivers and skates though - I think I'll get a 'track cleaning' attachment for one of the coaches/vans to help keep on top of the track during a running session. With all the high wind the sycamore in the garden had dropped a lot of sticky seed pods which was most of the muck I reckon.

Anyway - I'm off out this evening to look at a Frank S I'm considering buying for the KDL11 style conversion, and I've brought the bogie coaches back to Macclesfield to refurbish the roof finish with a satin dark grey.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Well I bought it...

It's down the list of projects but at the price it was too good to refuse...
I'll be starting the station next - probably alongside the bogie coach roofs...
