Eighton Bahn AKA testing testing RhB

Everyone has that one spot on there railway that causes more trouble than enough, It's more of a case if we admit it or not.;) You know that dodgy point, or that constant derailing spot.

Some may think that for me it's the whole railway, but its one of the slabs under the points by the single bridge, its always coming loose. Yesterday was another one of those, it's loose again days.
Normal fix is, lift track, slab up, clean off cement on underside, chip away at cement bed, mix more, then re lay slab. As i am out of cement, but had a tube of that no more nails ish stuff, an alternative plan was formed.

All it needed was a bit of weight to keep it down until set...

...the more observant of you will think I should have left the track up then replaced it after the stones had helped it set in place, I'm not saying the idea to weight it down was an afterthought, but..,

One of the big problems with cement in this heat is drying too quick. You can get additives but an additional faff when you are doing ‘running repairs’.

The no nails you used may work for a while hope so.

A trick though with menting in this weather is to soak the brick or slab in water till well wet, not possible with the base but a good spray with water n washing up liquid mixed in an old cleaning spray bottle should do the trick. Then your cement has something wet to get a grip on, slowing down the drying somewhat to give a good joint.

I have stuck bricks together with construction adhesive to make (low) pedestals, and the joints have survived several winters and summers. Of course, the joints are under compression rather than tension, but nodrog's is too.

Soaking bricks etc., is done here, on a sometimes industrial scale.;)

Are you gluing your track to the stone?

One thing that might help is re-aligning the rails at that point, 2 serious "jogs" horizontally.

Why not let the rails free float in ballast at the problem area?

Greg

Not gluing the track to the stone, as the photos suggest, but rather it's the slab glued to the cement as it had come loose again.

That section between the point and the bridge has had to be re done several times for some reason it keeps moving/lifting/dropping.

I have glued track down in the past, in fact some of the glued sections are still holding, but now the track just sits on the slabs.

After many, many months of slumbering on, the last few days have seen the railway reclaimed from the jungle where necessary.

So a number of firsts today,

The first train...

P1030140.JPG

MOW PW train, not sure what the tractor is for, but hey ho.

Also, the first derailment of the year...

P1030146.JPG

But then, an electrical contact issue with a point...

P1030148.JPG

So after the re-railing and maintenance more running...

...parking is at a premium in the shed...

P1030156.JPG

...in more ways than one...

P1030158.JPG

...between the showers, wasn't sure if trains were going in or out...

P1030160.JPG

2nd level in the shed would help, line up or down from the bridge?

Maybe a shelf or two, but it's in the parking, today all parked up with space to spare for a few more coaches.

But enough of digressing, today has seen more running...

Today we have plenty of parking spaces...

P1030191.JPG

...but another problem soon made his presence felt...

P1030202.JPG

,,,but normal running was soon established...

P1030192.JPG

P1030206.JPG

...point replacement...

Bit of a change today. Sort of corporate green...

P1030227.JPG

...problem required the introduction of single line working...

P1030221.JPG

...not everyone gets the message of course...

P1030224.JPG

Although today is not over, now having a break for something to eat.

But have managed to have a bit of a running session...

P1030249.JPGP1030250.JPG

P1030258.JPG

...almost all of my stuff, just one Crok Loco, 3 coaches ,6 box vans and a few odds and sods missing...

P1030257.JPG

...even managed a short PW train, on the extension, all it had to do was wait for the passage of two trains to get back to the yard...

P1030265.JPG

...I may have spoken too soon...

P1030266.JPG

...anyhow, may as well grab a drink whilst, whilst doing the repair...

P1030267.JPG

...it's all squared away for the moment, but there is still plenty of daylight left.

Bit of a same old, same old sort of day today...

More railway revival activity today.

Managed to get both Navigators to talk to the loco fleet...

P1030278.JPG

...so much so that at one point one was running two locos and the other, one and route settings...

P1030271.JPG

...there was a technical hic up at one point which brought out members of the orange army...

P1030286.JPG

...speed steps were all out of kilter, one auto coupler wouldn't and sounds were just wierd. Seriously I had to retire to the shed and refer to the printed matter to sort it...

P1030269.JPG

...but they now agree with each other and things went as planned from that point forward...

P1030281.JPG

...so it's now been put to bed, plans are afoot for tomorrow which may not see anything run...
