New Bachmann Lyn

I've just finished a quick first test with the Bachmann 2-4-2 Lyn in the garden and my initial assessment is ... excellent!

I run DCC and the loco is analogue so I ran it at address zero. As expected the motor squealed which surely can't be good long term so I just did a few laps for now. I had given the loop a cursory once round with the track cleaning block, so the loop was basically clean, but it ran flawlessly. I ran it onto some sidings which hadn't had a recent clean and again no problems at all. All eight wheels have pickups and combined with a reasonable weight my initial impression about pickup is really positive - I'll admit to having had a concern about pickup given the lack of skates, but certainly thus far no problems to report at all. The loco also had no problems with my LGB R1 or R3 points.

My intention is to fit a decoder ASAP - just need to decide which one to use. According to the documentation supplied the loco has an 8-pin NMRA socket as well as a speaker already fitted should you wish to use a sound decoder - I probably will...

The smokebox door opens to reveal two switches, one for the smoke generator and the other a three way switch offering two polarities and an off position. I haven't tested the smoke as this is my first loco with a smoke generator :) and I've no idea what to use - presumably LGB sell something suitable.

The loco as pictured is fresh from the box. Also supplied is an alternate larger smoke stack, a pair of crew (one very american the other a bit more British looking), a shovel, an alternate set of knuckle couplers (the factory fitted are the high type, in the box are the low type) and hook and loop couplers.

To my eye this is a very nice model with lots of detail. The scale is - according to the documentation 1:20.3 - for me acceptably close the nominal 1:19 I claim to model at and I imagine it would sit well with LGB scale stock too.

Here are some pictures from the testing, see what you think...

I got mine from Garden Railway Centres, with the usual excellent service from Andrew there. Looking at his website it would seem that he has sold out, but GScaleOnline still appear to have stock. The nice chap at Kent Garden Railways said he had ordered a fair amount of stock too when I called in a couple of weeks ago.
On the evidence so far I'd really recommend this loco, it seems to run very well indeed and looks lovely.

I have a couple of jobs to do: get a decoder, get the smoke going and swap the couplings - ideally for 16mm style chain link which I use for my British outline stuff...

Has anyone else got one? I'd be interested to hear any other views on it.

Cheers

Now that looks fantastic a very nice model from Bachmann and a great price too

A black one would look good on your logging line Rich. ;)

It would :bigsmile:but i have a live steamer to pay for first

Showing on HobbyShop, Faversham website at £165.00...........

Hmmm I fancy one!! Doesn't fit the Austrian theme though on the EJ&KLR. I always liked the old version when they first released them, I was in my early teens and thought it would make a lovely garden line, an L&B recreation. Shame they didn't then, and don't seem to be offering now, any suitable stock. Mind Accucraft should sort that - sounds a similar scale.

i sold mine last year before it was known that it was going to be re released
i was dismissive at first but i can see me buying one of these one day
looks quite good,,
what is the scale of it,,,, is it 1,22 ish,,,

Looks so much better than the original version, must resist temptation.........

you can buy 4 of these for the price of a forney,,,,

can anyone put a comparison picture up,,,

Nice looking engine. I had given up on Bachmann engines because of the quality issues. When I heard they had done improvments to the Indie and the Lyne I decided I would give them another try. I was going to get the Lyne but then I saw the Industrial and ended up getting that. So far I am very happy with my industrial. Runs great (Little light so not a great puller but then yet the prototype was not ment to pull a lot). I dont pull a lot anyway. I also like how they kept the price down on both engines. I was starting to think Bachmann was never going to have prices comparable to the 10 wheelers.
Now im waiting on the release of the improved 10 wheeler. Im hoping the price is low and if not then I might get the Lyne.

I'm hoping that the new Lyn is going to an improvement over the old one! It looks like it will be. I'm still trying to get one reasonably working Lyn out of two old ones but that's another story...

Question is, what decoders and more importantly sound cards will work well with the new one? I may have managed to acquire a black, unlettered new Baldwin and am wondering which sound card will be most appropriate. I've done some web searches but can't find anything that actually mentions sound for a 2-4-2 narrow gauge Baldwin. Any thoughts?

Martino, the decoder question is interesting. The Lyn has an 8 pin NMRA socket for a decoder and solder contacts on the PCB for the speaker and contacts on the axel which allow sound to sync with the chuffs.
So one option is certainly to put in a decoder with an 8 pin plug. However, there's nothing stopping you ripping out the internal PCBs and wiring for the lamp and smoke generator and just putting in whatever decoder you choose. I know that the 8 pin thing is convenient and a very simple way of adding a decoder, but I am not sure that the 8 pin socket is really appropriate for a large scale decoder. The reason for this is that the 8 pin socket is really just for OO use and so the available decoders are mostly rated around 1A. In fact there are not too many with higher current ratings and Bachmann gives no indication in the literature of what would be suitable.
Yesterday in a fit of impatience I decided to pop into Modelzone in London which is pretty much the only shop in Central London which might sell you a decoder. I came out with a Hornby Sapphire decoder rated at 1A with a peak cut off of 1.5A. Not too expensive so I thought I'd give it a shot. The decoder works just fine in the loco, until I added a carriage. Unfortunately this lead to much stalling - presumably as the decoder reached it's limit and shut down. So the Sapphire will be on eBay pretty soon!
Not really wanting to remove all the electrical innards of the Lyn, I have hunted around and now ordered a Zimo MX632R decoder which comes with the 8 pin plug attached and has a continuous rating of 1.6A with a peak of 3A. I'm hoping this will be enough. It really should be as the NMRA spec for the 8 pin connector is of continuous loads of up to 1.5A with a peak of 3A - pretty much what the decoder is rated at. The Zimo decoder is not a sound one, but I have the option of adding sound via SUSI at a later date.
I did look for a bit at sound decoders, but also couldn't find a specific sound for a Baldwin 2-4-2. I would probably have gone for a generic narrow gauge steam sound.

The lowest price I can manage at the moment is £180. However, I do have a couple of the US versions in Black (91197) and Black & Red (91198) at only £165 each if members are interested

John you always give a very good deal !!

Daveyb was asking what scale this little beauty is - if someone has a Bachmann Conso (or anything else 1:20.3) as well as a one of these, could they please take a comparison picture ?

I'd say pretty please, but...........

Scale is 1:20.3 according to the supplied documentation, but I don't have anything Bachmann to compare it with. Don and Daveyb I'm happy to measure anything on the loco if that's useful...
