Out of the common market

I assume this is a temporary situation and that DHL have not severed ties with the UK!
They have for the present, and from reading the info from DHL looks like for a little while yet.............................. presently awaiting two such deliveries, one from Holland (finally!, been awaiting completion from a German supplier since September), and the other from Germany (which has been in limbo at a DHL depot since the 16th December), patience is a virtue!

Talk of custom fees might be a moot point at the moment. I ordered some stuff from modell-land.de last night and got this in an email this morning:
"unfortunately shipping to the UK is currently not possible with DHL. We have refunded your order via PayPal."

UPDATE: Don't panic! I think this is because my order contained some liquid smoke oil, so they cancelled the whole order.
UPDATE: now you can panic, I just tried to reorder my stuff without the liquid, and modell-land are not shipping to UK addresses at the moment. "We currently do not offer shipping for this address."
On the 22nd I had notification that UPS has suspended services in and out of the UK due to the fears regarding the new Coronavirus variant:

Following on from yesterday's email about some road services being suspended between the United Kingdom and several EU countries including France, due to fears concerning the spread of the latest variant of coronavirus, we have a further update.

UPS has taken the decision to temporarily suspend transborder Standard shipments in both directions between the UK/Ireland and continental Europe. This means that unfortunately, there will be no TB Standard collections today. Delays in and out of the UK are expected.

Here is a reminder of other services which are currently affected:

  • DHL Economy Select suspended (excluding UK to Republic of Ireland and vice versa)
  • DHL Parcel International suspended (excluding UK to Republic of Ireland and vice versa)
  • All FedEx and TNT freight (over 68kg) and non-conveyable shipments on Economy services moving between the UK, Republic of Ireland and Europe are suspended.
Air Services are not affected, but please be aware that given limited flight availability and high volumes, delays may occur.

DHL have a note on their website that all international services will be unavailable between 29 Dec and 5 Jan.

Presumably to update their systems with the new Brexit requirements (even though the company's German).

I suspect we have the double whammy of Brexit and new variant Flu, with carriers reacting to one or the other.

Thank you to everyone for keeping this discussion factual and not political. I left another railway modelling forum the day after the Brexit vote as I couldn't stand the opinions being aired. Not because I'm a snowflake, but because this is a hobby and should therefore be enjoyable. :)

Unfortunately, there are some people who enjoy arguing as a hobby, although not on this forum in my experience.

The mainland of Europe seem to have overlooked that certain companies in the UK may refuse to send merchandise to mainland Europe. Just because...

All together now!

"Oh yes we do!.."

(Brexit) It's behind u!

Well, there aren't any Pantomimes this year... :(

Well I'm not so sure, there where plenty of pantomime villains involved in the discussions. Whichever side you're on!

Unfortunately the carriers will charge you as much as what they think they can get away with and the governments as much as they can squeeze out of you.
Market forces will prevail................:(

i did wonder if/how my ebay purchase from Germany on Dec 26th would be affected, but it seems to have made its way through the system as usual and indeed is out for delivery to me today :D I reckon that's pretty good going over the holiday period.

Whatever you're buying there will a change, but don't forget we're (UK) are quite a large market for Europe, so I don't think the suppliers and manufacturers over there will shoot themselves in the foot by over pricing their goods, like wise the delivery companies.

I agree and in my, admittedly limited, experience it has always been more expensive to ship UK - Europe than to receive from there.

ROI always seems bl**dy expensive to ship to.
My theory :
Anything in Euros has to go East.. So it goes the long way round. - Would also explain why it takes so long, as well! o_O

PhilP.

I have a way round that. I joined An Phost's "Addresspal" - I can have my UK purchases sent to a UK address (with my unique code on the parcel) and it is airmailed to here, and (because of Flu) will be delivered for just a few euros (6 or 7). No pressure vessels like spray paints or batteries allowed. Plus there is a parcel weight and size restriction.

I tried to follow the Brexit thing but gave up because I couldn't understand it.
Probably because I am not living with it and had to rely on the media and depending which outlet I chose I got one opinion that contradicted another that I read.
I am looking to purchase some parts from the UK but I don't think that will affect me down here.
