Out of the common market

One of the things that is irritating me purchasing things in the net a Country of supply is often difficult to define. I have just the other day bought something and never managed to find out the supplier Country, all the clues appeared to be that it was English. Now on the delivery time it is clearly not Uk and I will probably have a big fat import bill to pay to Po. Ah well as they say, you cant take it with you.
SWMBO had the issue the other way round - bought in USD thinking she'd get hit with a bill and it turns out it was supplied from a warehouse in the UK

Certainly if the price was in USD I would not buy now! Things need to change to show where product will be shipped from for all Net Sales, but that is probably expecting too much!

You can always message/email the vendor and ask..

Part of your due diligence..

SWMBO was interested in some China on ebay. It indicated it was in the UK although the price was in USD. She contacted the seller & we collected it. The seller was in our town but exports lots to the US

Well ........................ I'm wondering whether LD3 is getting to me.

I've moved into the mode of pressing the button and b****r the consequences :tmi::tmi::tmi:

As for USD - nothing's changed; the duty, VAT and the highwayman's fees are the same - Europe's just fallen into line with that

Still waiting my parcel from Japan :think:

I have bought from the States (not railway items), and if I need (or is that really want) the item, then I just go for it, though I do begrudge the "courier" fee, and a lot of US companies will manage the import/export duty, and it has worked in the past for me :)

My Mallet is on its way back from Trainline. The postage cost was £30.00 for me to send it to them. Given ongoing problems at the ports I decided to fully insure it. That was an additional £35.00. I have had to pay a “brokerage fee” of £23.00 to UPS before they deliver it back to me. I bought a coach from Grootspoor just before Christmas, poastage was €25.00. They now quote prices starting at €44.00. Those of us modelling German narrow gauge will have to spend more or settle on what we have. I am glad I bought a lot of things last year that are not available from UK suppliers. Hopefully the Kiefernholzbahn has everything it needs.

Indeed Maybach I am so goad that the DR is fully stocked with all that I need, anything else required is likely to be the odd LGB Wagon. Easily sourced from Ebay or shows once we are allowed, providing not too exotic and I do not do exotic on my line just the boringly day to day normal for a East German Harz line in the 1980’s.

I just bought something from grootspoor postage and payment fees just under €20 so maybe settling down after initial uncertainty.

Dave

Hopefully that is the case. Good news if it is. Thanks for the update. I am a bit prone to the glass always being half empty.

I view this as a survival response. It’s always been my nature to see the bad in something first and then have to remind myself that for everything bad there must be something good to maintain the natural balance. There have been some circumstances and experiences I’ve yet to see the good out of it.

as far as i know, exports to no-EU countries are free of EU-VAT.
so, like the rest of the world you should just pay your national VAT.
(plus some customs fee, of course)
In Italy it is the same: merchandise going outside the E.U. is VAT exempt, which is collected in the Country of arrival, plus Custom duties.

Totally agree, this is how I managed imports from outside the EU before Brexit, so why would the EU be any different.
Never thought of that one though I was aware of exports to outside Uk being VAT free in the past, I believe that you had to pick things like this up before boarding a plane or have them posted direct out of EU to get the VAT Free price. Not sure I understand why the EU would treat us any different, surely they cant be charging their VAT to exports to all countries outside of EU?

That's the point, outside of the EU you get taxed according to your country's rules.

Being in the EU drew a blanket over VAT because you just did not have the visibility of the tax on imports / exports between EU countries.

One company I dealt with in the USA, would remove their tax, then add ours, so that on arriving in the UK they were UK tax paid, and no post office or other courier charges.

I have just bough something an Amazon, from the USA, and apparently this should arrive UK tax paid :)

I use a US component company..

They deal with the taxes, order value above around £35 and the carriage is included.

Good arrive in around three days. *

*Though I have not ordered this year yet..
