The EJ&KLR: Austrian narrow gauge in Cheshire

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Shady weather today, but after 3 it has dried up enough to get a train running. I dug out the railbus to help me muse over it's potential narrow gauge transformation and relivery...

It got a bit chilly later on so I migrated indoors to the lounge and lay on the carpet by the window, reading a book and watching a train go round pondering whether to add some more detail to the buildings and considering getting some LEDs for lighting the shed and station?

Vids all working now.

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Well, Fred helped me out by selling me a starter set Stainz for Alex, which arrived safely today...

He was very pleased, as pleased as a 5 week old baby can be! Start them young...

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Well Bruce I've got the LEDs sorted, just not the battery boxes yet - I want to use small AAA battery boxes concealed in the roofs, so that I don't need to run auxilary wiring. Step by step... I'll then fit LEDs to the railbus, which is over in Macclesfield with me at the moment for bashing after the Faur is finished :)

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Well today is Inselbahn day on the EJ&KLR.
I got my hands on the incredible value Wangerooge set from LGB last week, from Modell-land in the end due to the UK importer not importing enough sets into the UK! Apparently it has been the best selling LGB item for years...

Anyway - for less than £300 you get an oval (12x R1 and 4x short straights), transformer, controller, HF130 diesel and 3 wagons - I just cannot comprehend how this is possible for the price, or at least compared to other items in the LGB catalog! Anyway...

Yes, Inselbahn. Island railway - the Frisian islands off the north German coast are unique in that many have no vehicles. To ferry passengers and supplies to the villages from the ferry terminals a number of the islands have narrow gauge railways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanger...36/dc9cc48cfdde47269132d2a9b0930c53.jpg[/IMG]

Great photos James. The Kof really is a little belter, isn't it?

It's a lovely engine - big (well 1:19 I think) compared to some of the other LGB engines - although similar to the Frank S and Stainz I think :)
I will likely repaint it one day - into a dark green with a grey chassis and some etched number plates (to be like the OBB ones in the 1950s) - but for now I'll be keeping the set as is for now - and I've promised Elly she can play with the wagons whenever she wants :)

Don't you mean she's told you that you can?

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Well the weather forecast this afternoon is not so great so with Alex waking up at 6am it meant I was out running trains in the garden before 8.30am!

I've been trying out my re-lettered and titivated stake wagons to represent the EJ&KLR in the 1980s. These have had the decks painted brown (Humbrol 98) with some tan colour dry brushed on whilst it was tacky. I used a fibreglass brush to remove the DR and 'Wernigrode' markings to the sole bars, then added EJ&KLR transfers. The whole wagon was then given a coat of satin varnish and the yellow stakes fitted. Mum and I have identified some decent candidates for a timber load - later in the week :)

Note that the EJ&KLR always puts the passenger accomodation behind the locomotive - that means at Alisendorf that it's a bit of a trek from the station building to the coach.

Lovely series of pictures James :thumbup::thumbup:

Re:The EJ&KLR project

I grabbed a couple more shots of the early morning running session from inside the house and due to the glare on the window have tinkered with them... I think they're quite atmospheric now. Normally I only crop or straighten photos but these two which were pretty useless, are much improved by the B+W and a touch of contrast.

Tim (Persistant Bodger) came round in the afternoon - more in a mo (nearly 30 photos to upload :))

Re:The EJ&KLR project

Tim (Persistant Bodger) came over this afternoon with his lovely hotch potch collection of bashed/scratchbuilt rolling stock. It's all largely IOM/Irish 3ft gauge inspired in roughly 15mm to the foot... plus a few oddities!

Tim's approach is very much 'if it looks right'. I think they're bloomin brilliant models - yes a touch rough around the edges in the running department but they look great. Tim is an artist, always has been since we've known each other (25ish years now), whereas I was always more of an Engineer/Architect. It comes through in our approach to modelling in the garden... If it wasn't for me none of this stuff would have been created... but if it wasn't for Tim I wouldn't have wanted an LGB in the first place...

Anyway - first up a GRS based Barclay 4-4-0t, using an Otto chassis and custom outside cranks. Runs well, needs new buffer beams and couplings and will be lined. Not Tim checking out the performance in the back ground, the first time it had seen proper use...

Next the odd ball - the Traction engine shunter. Yes noisy, and a little rough after a few minutes (apparently a bearing is missing in the gear train) but very well observed and nice weathering. Just as if it's dirty, but the driver has given it a good rub down with an doily rag.

Third - the Bagnall inspired tiny 0-4-0 wing tank and scratchbuilt weedkilling train. Unfortunately this is not working, as the line could do with a dose...

Final shot shows posed with the IOM Beyer Peacock... more in a moment...

Re:The EJ&KLR project

The IOM Beyer Peacock is freelance, but captures the character of the original perfectly and ran pretty well after a tinkering with the front pony truck. It lacks adhesive weight though so couldn't manage the train. Tim's going to add some more to the tank insides...

You've seen the Norwegian Beyer Peacock before - Tim has rebuilt the engine to re-balance the weight and the transformation was incredible. A smooth driving and powerful engine... everyones favourite here this afternoon.
