Behind Closed Doors

Here is a photo of my Wrekin with painted dome (and Locolines transfers). Not quite the same as Lawley but may help with the persuasion..........
Cheers

That really is a fantastic looking job Chris, it provided me with the inspiration for the paint job on No4 "Ardwhallin" when I saw it in "Garden Rail". what type and colour paint did you use?

Thanks for the comments, seems I will have to be brave about the dome! The eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted that the proposed alterations have been mocked up in Microsoft "Paint", latest addition may be to remove the cab handrails and replace with new ones on to the tank / bunker sides with brass knobs and rails. Brandbright do a cowcatcher and bell worthy of consideration !

Mike I think you know my view about the dome:) Edit: Oh and about the copper cap too. Very nice for the GWR though.

You guys are going to get me in to so much trouble!:nail:

I think the proposed mods look great - as do your other two locos! The changes to the bunker on Lawley make a huge difference.
Regarding paint - I used Precision Paints P30 LMS Crimson Lake gloss on my dome (as recommended by Tag). The Locolines transfers are full sheets so the tank colour is the transfers. Roy had two goes to get it right. They do need paint round the edge though.
Cheers

Chris are the transfers durable? How did you seal them? For my crests I use Tamiya varnish which is fine for smaller transfers but I would not really want to do that for such a big area.

Hi Graham
I put these transfers on well over a year ago now and they have mainly lasted well, though this loco does not get a lot of use. The cylinder ones began to lift after a few months but Roy did me some replacements FOC. The edges of the tanks nearest the boiler began to lift, but I degreased and stuck them down again with PVA and they seem OK. I didn't varnish them at all - just painted the edges with the appropriate colour. In fact he does them with a black edge, but on most of them I cut this off. If I were doing it again, I would varnish with a satin polyurethane spray (not acrylic spray) - mostly to ensure the edges are thoroughly sealed.
Cheers
Chris

Further thoughts!
Slightly different in that the tanks are left as is, body shell nudged forward and the only surgery being involved is that to the top of the coal bunker. Sandboxes added behind tool box

Mike if you nudge the body shell forward the tanks will encroach onto the smokebox.

When you see it like that, doesn't it cry out to be a 2-6-2?

I prefer the idea of extending the frames back or packing out the rear buffer beam rather than moving the tinware forward.
I would move the toolbox back to leave space for a lamp. I quite like where my sandboxes are...see avatar. (but that may not fit with your 'standards'.)
The smokebox needs to be painted matte and the dome maroon.
Otherwise; excellent loco.
Just my 2c.

I prefer the earlier mock- up to the tank moved forwards one...

Just realised why NHN's loco looked so familiar, I couldn't place it though- it's a Rob Roy!

C'mon Dave, your avatar is great but we need more piccies of your loco than that... Looks really interesting, are there any more piccies out there?

Thanks for the input to this guys, much appreciated and several comments taken on board.
Matt, the earlier mock up also had the tanks pushed forward, its just the bit by the cut out that has altered, so that would mean sandboxes would have to added as a separate bit of kit, instead of being incorporated into the end of the tanks.
I tried a mock up of the loco with the tanks shortened to the point where the cut out starts (Isle of Man style if you like) with the sandboxes mounted by the boilers mid line, but did not like all that much, strange really as that would make the loco basically a Wrekin with a GWR type rear bunker!
The thinking cap is still firmly on the head!

I think that its the Edrig conversion that had a topic on the GSM forum.....

You're not often wrong, Matt - but you are this time! Rob Roy is a Caley dock tank loco (used to drive a 7 1/4 one!) the J88 is a LNER ....I think ex-North British....loco.&:

Ooops- fair enough! Similar looking wee beastie anyway- both very Scottish!
Never seen a 7 1/4 Rob Roy, but I've driven a very nice 3 1/2 example. Bet it's an ace loco to run in the bigger gauge.

Back on topic- Mike, I know you'd shifted the body about it both- but I think the first one, with the tanks dropping down to footplate level at the front again instead of having a cut out is better. It looks less Lawley like for starters, and also seems more in keeping with the rest of your fleet while still being noticeably different.

Have you decided to paint the dome yet? You'll have to do the Wrekin's too then! But you definitely should.

Yes I have decided that the picture in post 51 is more to my liking, I can weave the story into F&St.M folklore that Finn came from Tralee (or Dingle!)
If I paint the dome, I will have to do it next time Mrs GH Wood is across at her sisters, in march, at least I will have a few days to live after the painting:laugh:
As for No 4 "Ardwhallin" (Wrekin) the dome definately stays brassy, her driver, Jeff Skelly, keeps her in immaculate condition at all times, if it is not kept gleaming like a new pin, his bad moods are the stuff of legend.
