Eighton Bahn AKA testing testing RhB

You know when you get one of those daft ideas, well Sunday night was one of those nights, that the Head Shunt could become a through road onto the bridge to the shed.

Anyhow yesterday I thought I would see if it was a plausible.

So today has seen the plan acted upon.

Have changed my mind on how to install the point, was going shorten the straight rails on the point, then it would have been a straightforward, add a curve to the curved rails and join up.

But if/when the point needs to be removed, another on would need to be butchered to fit, so it was just installed as is.

So that is it, manual switch, so that traffic off the bridge goes straight, and traffic on will have to come via the Head Shunt. Isolating sections will prevent the drop of doom I have mentioned in the past, if the bridge is out, and a further manual switch where the off line joins the main, so that no train can get onto the bridge that way.

Today has seen another bit of my sideways thinking.

For those who may not recall, Eighton Bahn Towers, was re roofed three years ago, and naturally there was a skip full of rubbish and offcuts of the modern roofing stuff, a large portion of which which somehow found its way into the shed. :D

The result of todays tinkering is a trial of a platform idea, maybe a bit too modern looking, as the black could be taken for tarmac. :o

Its 11cm wide and packed to five times the thickness, then the platform, may be able to get away with 10 cm wide.

and also a barrow crossing, which is a push fit between the rail chairs.

Just need to find away to disguise the grey edge that results from the cutting process, or may just paint the whole thing grey.

Looking good, would lightly sanding the slate bring out the lighter grey to match the edges?

No pics, but a quick update.

The glue that I put so much faith in, as it was exterior grade, has failed, it bubbled up like snow drifts between the track, so it had to go.

All the track was lifted, cleaned, and the slabs blasted with a hose, and the track re laid on Saturday, and glued down again on Sunday, but with something I have tried out when the problem cane to light, waste water pipe, solvent glue, well it was all I had. Have to report it worked, I should not have doubted it, after all it was used on one of the bridge piers I had to make to match the rest, and that was three or more years ago, and its is still holding. Should add that a thin layer of solvent will hold the track down, but it can be lifted again and cleaned off, or at least the trial version did. :-\

Also attacked the barrow crossing and platform prototypes, roofing material re use bits with grey primer, just to see how they will look, and disguise that edge that results from cutting. Its looking promising but see what it's like in the morning.

Cheers Steve.

More faffing around with the potential platforms, just see how they will look for height etc.

Raw material and sprayed versions.

As well as a junction box shelter, well that`s what I am calling it!!

......and now for daft idea number 1234567890 (A).

P1000861 (900 x 675).jpg

as I am giving serious thought, to removing the points from the bridge, moving the isolation track joint, to go back to one road onto the bridge,
in addition to removing the Heath Robinson method of preventing point run through from the wrong direction.

Ok now for another daft idea.

I have repositioned the points from the bridge, well removed them and turned though 180 degrees and re positioned them, which sort of gives me another through road, off the shed "branch" line.

It`s a bit of a pigs ear, just put it in to see what it looks like. Not sure if it will remain, or be tweaked, at some stage.

Looks like I need to re think that compound curve, as its R1, R3 and other bits of offcuts.
Need to get hold of an isolating fishplate from somewhere, and maybe a brace of R2 curves, and a cement infill, in order to tidy it up.

Maybe one of those think on it, over the Winter projects.

As a user of compound curves myself, I think yours looks absolutely fine indeed (a nice transition).

When are you starting the branchline to Darlo Gordon?

Its taken a long time but it's looking brilliant!

Compound curves aside, its just I wanted to only have R1s in the MPD not on the main line......Mick

Shed branch line, is now called the Darlo Branch......Roly[e]339[/e]

Over the last few days, have laid a cement slab for that compound curve, so its now permanent, unless I change my mind.

Today has seen 210 Ltrs of compost, deposited and those conifers I bought earlier sort of planted, pots et al, in the hope they will not grow too big, and if they do I can easily remove them ::)

Its coming on a real treat now Gordon!

Looking good, Gordon. I really admire the quality of your stonework - very neat. The conifers already make quite a difference.

Rik

Recent developments, none of which I have had much of a hand in.

First one.

That tree next door which overhung the railway, dropping its leaves and branches, the widow maker as it has been called, is no more.

P1000879 (900 x 675).jpg

Second one.

I have inherited/recycled various large pieces of stone as a result of my other neighbour`s building work.

P1000880 (900 x 675).jpg

More of it is expected, I have no idea what I am going to do with it.

Good recycling in prospect Gordon? ;)

not the point gorden ,if its free ,grab it.. worry about what your going to do with it later! 8)

Agree with Mike..

Also, if you build some more railway.. ;) ;) You will have less grass / garden to maintain in the years to come..
;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Afraid not Paul, wasn't my tree, so had nowt to do with the felling of it. All I got was a smattering of sawdust over the garden.

But keep an eye on the other side of my garden, as the trees there are potentially up for a trim as well,
but again as someone else is doing it for me FOC, it may not happen too soon.
